In the 1950s, a new drink started to become popular in the beatnik
subculture, it was called acid.  The recipe was kept secret, because
there was more money to be made selling this drug than any other.  The
reason it was called acid is because to make it you could take any
other drug, but usually mushrooms, peyote, and marijuana, and dissolve
them into a liquid.  The liquid could then be diluted, and the drug
would still retain its hallucinogenic properties.

When you add a spoonful of sugar to a cup of tea or coffee, you usually
stir it to help it dissolve. There are two ways of helping something
dissolve in a solution: stirring it and heating it up. But even if you
do both of these, there is still a limit to the amount of sugar you can
add to your drink. Eventually you will reach a stage where no more
sugar will dissolve no matter what you do: your drink is now saturated.

Because acid was diluted, people who took the drug went on much more
enjoyable trips and people began to find medicinal properties for the
new drug.  Even though the drug could be considered a poison, you could
still build up a resistance to its effects.  It was much easier and
safer to build up a resistance to acid than taking hard core
hallucinogens.  The profound changes in a persons consciousness would
take place as they built up a resistance to the drug, which were very
therapeutic.  The exact opposite happens when a person takes steroids,
because once they stop taking the drug the resistance and withdrawal
causes them to lose all their muscles.

Other people began using this light weight hallucinogen to reach states
of religious ecstasy.  It was possible to reach high states of
spiritual bliss from the therapeutic effects of the drug, when a person
used them in the correct set and setting and did not abuse the
substance.

These amazing effects of acid did not continue when in the 1960s people
began to abuse hallucinogenic drugs just to party and take large over
doses of the substance.  A new drug came on the seen called LSD, which
was entirely different from the recipe for acid.  LSD could be put into
liquid as well, and it was so potent that even the smallest drop of it
could send a person into a trip that would kill them in one sense of
the word.

When a person takes LSD they lose themselves and often never find
themselves again, and the life they left behind is gone as well.  When
they do make it back to reality they come back strong from their bad
trip, but usually are left with some unrecoverable problems from the
drug.

Some people were smart enough to dilute LSD as well, but the secret
recipe of acid died out with the original beatniks.  Today you find
only drug abuse and addiction among drug users.  Very few people
realize that moderation is the key to using drugs medicinally, for
therapy, healing, or religious reasons.

What is also key is not to use drugs just to party, and to only take
them when you need to, and when you are able to be in a spiritual
setting where you can meditate and pray.  Taking acid just once in your
life time is enough for many people to recover from severe emotional
problems.

This is the real history of acid that I learned from one of the
original leaders of the revolution.
